Gertrude M. Flack, 86, formerly of Blenheim Newport, and 15 Harrison Avenue, Newport, died peacefully surrounded by her loving family on Wednesday, September 12, 2007 at Forest Farm Center in Middletown.

She was the wife of the late Paskle P. 'Pat” Flack.

Born in Kittery, ME, on October 21, 1920, she was a daughter of the late Robert M. and Mary Gertrude (Donahue) Johnston.

She was a graduate of Rogers High School, Class of 1939. After high school and during World War II she was employed as a clerk at the Naval Torpedo Station in Newport, later the Newport Tax Assessors Office and for Cherry and Webb on Bellevue Avenue. She also worked for many years for the Hot Lunch Program for the Newport School System.

Gert was a long time parishioner of St. Augustin's Church, member of the St. Augustin's Parish Guild, the Catholic Daughter of America, the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians, and along with her husband, a Charter Member of Gooseberry Beach.

She is survived by her three daughters,

  • Patricia A. McLean and her husband Bruce of Portsmouth,
  • Maureen F. McEvoy of Newport,
  • Kathleen Flack Updegrove and her husband Rick of Portsmouth;
  • seven grandchildren, Jennifer DeLisle, Sarah McLean, James McEvoy, Robert McEvoy, Lauren Updegrove, Andrew Updegrove, and Bradley Updegrove;
  • her great-grandchildren, Cameron McEvoy and Aiden McEvoy, and
  • several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Kathleen Bowman, Helen Pascoe, and Robert 'Lefty” Johnston.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, September 17, 2007 at St. Augustin's Church, Carroll Avenue, Newport, at 10 a.m. Burial will be at St. Columba Cemetery, Middletown.

Visiting hours will be held Sunday, September 16, 2007 in the O'Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, from 3-6 p.m. Donations may be made in Gert's memory to the Visiting Nurse Services of Newport and Bristol County Hospice Program, P.O. Box 690, Portsmouth, RI 02871.
