Charles W. Schanil, Jr. - [December 5, 1955 - May 7, 2008] Print this page

Charles W. "Chuck" Schanil, Jr., 52, of Pond Avenue, Newport, passed away unexpectedly in his home on Wednesday, May 7, 2008.

A native Newporter, born on December 5, 1955, he was the son of Charles W. Schanil of Newport, and the late Adeline Murray Schanil. Chuck was a gradate of St. Augustin's School in Newport and attended the former DeLaSalle Academy until its closing in 1972. He was a graduate of Roger’s High School, Class of 1974.

Chuck worked for the Newport School Department for 10 years as a maintenance worker and also worked at the Newport Naval Base.

A huge New England sports enthusiast, Chuck was well versed in the daily progress of the Patriots in the fall/winter and the Boston Red Sox in the spring/summer. He shared this love with his father at the Grand Islander Center and his son, Chucky, and actually just about anybody else who showed the tiniest bit of interest in sports. Coaching his own son, Chucky, in Little League baseball in Fall River was something of which he was very proud. Chucky was the most important person in his life.

Chuck touched the lives of many people especially Dee and Bea, the ladies in his apartment complex, whom he enjoyed helping out and visiting for afternoon tea. Chuck also enjoyed lots of laughs with his eight nephews, one niece and his many friends. In fact, because of his 'gift of gab', it would not be unusual to hear others tell Chuck to please, 'get to the point'.

Besides his father, Chuck leaves his son, Charles W. 'Chucky' Schanil, III, of Fall River, MA, and his former wife, Marjorie 'Marcy' Ytkin, also of Fall River; three sisters,

  • Catherine 'Katie' Chase and her husband, Jim of Portsmouth;
  • Christine 'Tina' Segerson and her husband, Pat, of Newport; and
  • Eileen Roberts and her husband, Bruce, of Lagrange, Maine.

He also leaves his niece and nephews, Tina, Jim, Brian, and Kevin Chase; Ben, Matt, and Adam Segerson; and Chris and Brad Landreville.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass at St. Joseph's Church on Broadway in Newport on Monday, May 19, 2008, at 9 a.m. to celebrate his life.

In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Chuck's memory to the St. Joseph's Church Soup Kitchen, 5 Mann Avenue, Newport, RI 02840.
