The RIDOT Aquidneck Island Passenger Rail/Bike Path Project staff held a Public Workshop held on October 16, 2001. The purpose of the meeting was to identify alternatives for:
- Rail upgrade and rail stations
- Potential bike path location within and/or along the rail corridor
- Potential busway
RIDOT presented the following alternatives for the Newport Secondary rail corridor:
- Alt. 1. Dinner/Tourist Train + Bike Path
- Alt. 2. Dinner/Tourist Train + Bike Path + On-Island Shuttle
- Alt. 3. Dinner/Tourist Train + Bike Path + Commuter Rail
- Alt. 4. On-Island Busway Shuttle + Bike Path
They identified the 'Next Steps' to be:
- Comments on Alternatives
- Develop conceptual alternatives including bike path, rail/ bus r.o.w. and stations.
- Next public meeting to present report in Spring 2002
