Newport - The City Year Young Heroes volunteered their time last Saturday to clean the local railway of litter.

The Old Colony & Newport Railway and Maria Broadbent from the City of Newport - Clean Cities program organized the annual event.

The volunteers boarded the OCNRR train at the downtown depot and headed North to start the cleanup. Three teams collected at least a dozen bags of trash. The Newport Dinner Train’s operations manager, Jono Babbitt, arrived with a rail truck, picked up the junk and trash, and left it at the designated pick up point under the Newport Bridge.

The crew then took the volunteers north on the track to enjoy a pizza party while hearing Don Elbert’s presentation on the history of the railway, the Aircraft Carriers, and the environment.

Dominos donated the pizza, while Newport City Councilman Rick O’Neill provided the sodas."
